My Type of Typography

This may sound like something I have said before (and maybe I have), but this week just might be my favorite lesson of the entire course. I would not classify myself generally as a nerd, but if there is one thing that would indict me as one, it would be my insatiable curiosity and fascination with typography. Even before I considered the design industry, I have always had a keen awareness of different typographies and how they emotionally communicate to people. When I was little, I had to have vision therapy to help me with my poor eye-tracking that was causing me to be read slowly. I used to hate books. Now, I love them, and even more so the ones that have a great, helpful typography.

The documentary on Helvetica is definitely what stuck with me this week. I have always loved and appreciated that typeface in all of its various font varieties, but I did not realize how much designers felt threatened by its commonplace nature and widespread use. I thought I felt passionate over font choices, but now I realize my passions are dwarfed in comparison to those who shape their careers around typography. Although I understand the reactions and opinions shared in the film, I still maintain that the broad acceptance of Helvetica is not a flaw (let alone a vice) of its creative design and is truly a household name in the legacy of modern typography.
